Characteristics

Hokkaido's own varieties, adapted to a cold climate in a way that is rare even worldwide, vary widely in sweetness, softness, and degree of stickiness, allowing them to meet a broad range of uses and needs. As evaluations of Hokkaido rice's eating quality have risen dramatically, its recognition has grown as well. Consumers highly value not only its taste but also its production volume, stable supply, and safety and reliability, and it has established its position as one of Japan's representative rices.

Link with the production area

In a cold region where rice growing was considered so difficult that the Meiji government gave up on cultivating it, pioneers who longed for rice never stopped searching for suitable land and methods. Through continued selection using the Akage variety, they finally succeeded in growing rice in 1873. Building on this Akage variety, further improvement has continued within Hokkaido for more than 100 years, producing numerous varieties once unthinkable in a cold region that meet diverse needs in eating quality, productivity, and uses.
